Key Precautions for Using LCD Displays

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels are widely used in televisions and computer monitors. They are known for their low power consumption, compact size, and low radiation. However, to ensure stable performance and extend service life, it is important to follow proper usage guidelines. Below are the key precautions to consider when using LCD displays.

1. Prevent DC Voltage Application

The DC component in the driving voltage should be kept as low as possible. It is recommended that the DC offset does not exceed 50 mV. Long-term application of excessive DC voltage can cause electrolysis and electrode aging, which will significantly reduce the lifespan of the LCD.

2. Avoid Exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) Light

Liquid crystal materials and polarizers are organic substances that can undergo chemical reactions and degradation when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, during assembly, UV protection measures—such as installing UV-filtering films or protective covers—should be considered based on the application environment.

During use, the display should also be protected from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent UV-related deterioration.

3. Protect Against Harmful Gases

Liquid crystal materials and polarizers can chemically react and degrade in environments containing harmful gases. Appropriate isolation and protection measures should be implemented in such environments.

In addition, after final assembly, LCD products should not be stored in sealed conditions for extended periods. Chemical vapors released from plastic housings, adhesives, or PCB cleaning agents may accumulate and damage the liquid crystal layer and polarizers.

4. Avoid Excessive Mechanical Pressure

An LCD panel is made of two glass substrates separated by a very thin gap of approximately 5–10 μm. The inner glass surfaces are coated with an alignment layer, which is easily damaged.

Excessive pressure on the screen surface must be avoided to prevent damage to the alignment layer. If excessive pressure is applied during assembly or handling, the device should be left to rest for at least one hour before powering on.

During operation, sudden temperature changes must also be avoided. When installing the display, pressure should be applied evenly and only to the edges. Never press on the center of the panel, and do not apply force at an angle.

5. Operate Within the Specified Temperature Range

LCDs must be stored and operated within their specified temperature range. If the temperature is too high, the liquid crystal phase may disappear and transition into a liquid state, causing the display to turn dark and stop functioning. In this case, do not apply power. Allow the temperature to return to normal, and the display may recover on its own.

If the temperature is too low, the liquid crystal may crystallize (often appearing as frost-like patterns), which can cause permanent damage.

In addition, long-term storage at extreme temperatures, or exposure to vibration and mechanical shock, can also lead to bubble formation inside the LCD.

6. Prevent Glass Breakage in Segment LCDs

Since LCD panels are made of glass, they are susceptible to cracking or shattering if dropped or subjected to strong impact. Therefore, overall product and system design must carefully consider mounting methods, as well as vibration resistance and shock protection, to ensure reliable operation.
